Another Photo Restoration Time lapse

The Restoration

Its Friday again. YAY! This means we have another time lapse video for you to enjoy. this was just one restoration out of 11 that I did for this customer to create a wonderful historic display. This was a challenging restoration of an old black and white photo. It was very small and very dirty. The quality of the photo means there is a shortage of details. Which makes the restoration a little difficult when trying to retain as much detail as possible whilst removing as much dirt and blemishes from the image. But the final result i think is very nice and a big improvement on the original.

Covid-19 Level 1

Update

As of Tuesday the 9th of June, we are now at Covid-19 Level 1. This means life is back to normal with the exception of international travel. You are welcome to drop off your photo for restoration during normal business hours. Which I have listed below. We no longer have to wear masks or sanitise our hands every 2 minutes.   Which is all great news. Lets hope we can get New Zealand moving again in the right direction. Please support your local businesses as they are the backbone of the New Zealand economy.

Time-lapse

To celebrate the end of the severe lock down measures. I have put together my latest time-lapse movie for you. This was a restoration of a nice family portrait that had definitely seen better days. With a few hours work though, we had the photo looking very nice and it is going to be framed and displayed again. If you would like to learn more about our photo restoration services please click here. Please enjoy and let me know what you think of this latest time-lapse video. Also please 'subscribe', 'like' and share the video please.

Time-lapse Video

New Time-lapse Video

In the past I have posted many many many before and after photos and in recently videos. The before after videos have been a real success in quickly showing the results of our photo restorations. Video has a more engaging feel about it and is really good at showing the dramatic differences from the start point to the finish point. I have a long playlist of Before and After Videos which you can see on my You-Tube Channel click here to see them.

Now I have just uploaded my first time-lapse video. A time-lapse video is a a way of showing the full restoration work that occurs on the computer. But it is sped up and compressed into a few minutes. Instead of what is sometimes hours. The result is a short movie of about 4 minutes that shows all the work involved in restoring a photo, from start to finish. This first one was a fairly simple restoration of a 100 year old black and white photo.

The software I used was OBS Studio and Microsoft's Photo software that comes with Windows 10. It was simple enough to do and hopefully I can make improvements as I do more. The only reason I had to use Microsoft's 'Photo' software was because I couldn't get Photoshop's video editing to increase the video speed beyond 4x speed. If any knows how to increase the speed higher than this please let me know.

I hope you enjoy it. I shall be making more in the future. So please watch this space.

Restoration of Silvering in Black and White Photos

Old Black and White Photos can sometimes suffer from a problem called silvering. As the chemical bonds in the photo breaks down over time. The silver in the photo becomes visible on the surface and is seen as a shiny pale haze that obscures the darkest parts of the photo.

If you have a photo that looks like this, don't worry. We can fix it. We can restore the lost details. Using Photoshop we can remove the haze and fading that the silvering has caused. Once restored these old precious photos can be printed & displayed and enjoyed again for many years to come.

Ask us today how we can help you restore your old black and photos.

More Colour Please

Ken sent me this old and tired portrait that had lost its colour and needed restoration. I was able to restore the colour using Photoshop and many layers of colour hand painted in to make this wonderful portrait come to life again. The colourization and restoration was very successful and Ken was very happy with the result.

Hi Richard

This is really looking good. So much better than before. We are really pleased

Add Colour This Year

WE are back! Happy new year to everyone. Towards the end of 2018 I had quite a few clients requesting photo colourization. Either from Black and white photos. Or old colour photos that have faded or become discoloured and require restoration and re-colourization

With Peter Jacksons new Film ‘They Shall Not Grow Old’ bring old black and white film into the modern colour era it is not surpising that lots of people are now realising how much of a difference it can make to an old image.

This year has started off in the same way the last ended so expect to see many more colourization restorations to come.

Royal Colour Restoration

This wonderful old photo of the Japanese royals was brought in by Her Majesty Nanasipauu Tukuaho Queen of Tonga. Unfortunately the original photo had been in a frame near the window and was exposed to the sun for many years before it came to me. So now it was sun bleached and almost completed faded away. Any colour that may have been present was lost due to the bleaching. Restoring the colour was not an option. This require a complete re-colouring to bring this back to life.

I had to research the correct colours for the sashes and the orders. But the background and the carpet I were to improvise. But I think you can see that this process of colourization really does bring this photo back to life.

Customer Feedback

Hi Richard,The photos are amazing and I am so pleased.

Many thanks,
Nanasipauu Tukuaho

Restoration of a discoloured photo

Ted brought in some wonderful photos for restoration from his days as a pilot with Air New Zealand. The photos had faded and suffered from discolouration. This is very common and happens to just about every photograph. But we were able to restore the colour and brighten up the image. There are many methods to restore colour but for this one we used curves adjustment layers with some masking here and there in Photoshop. The old livery of these Air New Zealand aircraft have come out looking much better and has taken Ted back to the good old days I'm sure.

Old Soldiers Should Never Fade Away

Amy sent me this very badly faded old photo by Courier Post. When it arrived it was virtually gone, it was barley visible. But I did a scan and using a variety of Multiple Layers and some heavy burn and dodging I was able to bring this old soldier back. But when the image became visible again. So did the hundreds of small cracks that covered the surface of the photo paper. You see this was not the original photo it was a copy that had been made at some time using a 'dye sublimation printer'. They are very commonplace and will most likely find them in your local pharmacy where they use them for passport photos or to provide prints from a Kodak kiosk. the problem is they don't last!! and this is how they end up... faded and cracked!

A few hours of extra work was needed to remove the cracks and finish off the restoration. To the delight of Amy who was over the moon. So much so she gave us a 5 star review on Google.

We had a photo which had almost disappeared due to sun damage and had been told it was not possible to save. Luckily I decided to have 1 last try and Richard did an amazing job giving a beautifully clear photo. Thanks.

How to remove mould

Todd sent me this very old and tired photo for restoration. It had suffered some severe mould damage and needed a good cleanup in Photoshop .  The mould shows itself as light and dark patches. But because there are so many we can't use the spot removal or the healing brush in the normal way. If you do then the light and dark patches are 'merged' and they become neither, ending up is a mid-tone grey. What was needed was to pick an area and decide if the surrounding blotches needed to be made lighter or darker to match the good areas. Then using the healing tool set to either 'lighten' or 'darken' mode I was able to match the damaged area with good areas, without merging the two and making everything muddy and grey. The results are very good and the faces became much more visible and the whole photo looks very presentable.

Google Review

Richard at Pixelfix did the impossible by taking an old family photo from the late 1800s that was suffering from significant mould damage and fading. I didn't think he would be able to do much with it, but I was wrong. Thanks Richard for breathing new life into a cherished family portrait.

- Todd
